Enrolling Transfer Students from Permanently Closed Schools

Students should see Barber and Cosmetology School Closure Information for Students

Students enrolled in schools that have since closed will have the opportunity for their completed credit hours to transfer to another school. TDLR will attempt to arrange for students enrolled in the closed school to attend another school.

Stay Informed

When a school closes, TDLR will provide updates on Facebook, Twitter and the TDLR website. You may also want to sign up to receive email notifications from TDLR. We will also keep the schools informed and updated with current information regarding specific situations.

Accepting Students from Closed Schools

If your school accepts students from a recently closed school, please send TDLR a list of the students you are willing to accept. Please provide the student’s name and permit number. Once the list is received, we will drop the students from the closed school, if they have not been dropped, and we will notify you once the students have been dropped. Once you receive our notification, you may enroll the students in your school.

The expenses incurred in accepting new students from closed schools will be paid from the Barbering and Cosmetology School Tuition Protection Account. The amount of the refund may not exceed $35,000.

Requesting Payment from the Tuition Protection Account

The executive director may authorize payment to a private school from the Barbering and Cosmetology School Tuition Protection Account if:

If funds are available in the Barbering and Cosmetology School Tuition Protection Account, all refunds due will be paid. Otherwise, TDLR will pay claims on a prorated basis from money available in the account. This account is not intended to pay for attorney’s fees, court costs, or other damages.

Discrepancies of Transfer Credit

If your transfer students claim to have completed hours that have not been reported in SHEARS, contact the Education and Examination division and provide the student’s name and permit number, and TDLR will research the discrepancy in hours.

Help and Support

Our priority is to get students re-enrolled in another school as soon as possible.

If you have any additional questions, you may contact the Education and Examination division directly. Any phone calls to the general customer service number will be routed through the Education Division for an email response.
