Endorsements

Endorsements determine which types of curricula your license allows you to teach. You must have at least one endorsement to hold a valid license, but you may hold multiple endorsements if desired.

When adding additional endorsements, you must submit the Court Ordered Instructor License Application and the $45.00 non-refundable application fee. On the application you will select the endorsement you wish to add.

There are four available endorsements, each with specific qualification requirements. When selecting the appropriate endorsement(s) under which you will instruct, you must submit the required credentials for the endorsement you are applying for.

To obtain endorsement as a DWI Intervention instructor, you must be one of the following:

You must also have at least two years of documented experience in case management or education relating to substance abuse and/or mental health.

DWI Education, Drug Offense Education Programs, or Alcohol Education Programs for Minors

To obtain one or more endorsements to instruct courses in DWI Education, Drug Offense Education Programs, or Alcohol Education Programs for Minors, you must hold one of the following credentials:

You must also have at least one year of relevant and documented experience providing direct client services to persons with substance abuse problems or mental disorders.

Examinations

Once your instructor application is approved, you will receive instructions on how to register for the exam.  The instructions will include the exam registration form.

Once TDLR receives your registration form and the $425.00 exam fee, you will receive the study materials and the Candidate Information Bulletin.

If you choose to add additional endorsements to your instructor license, you must take a separate exam for each endorsement. Each additional exam requires a $425.00 fee.

The Candidate Information Bulletin provides essential details about the examination process and includes content outlines for each of the four programs. These outlines list the exam topics and indicate the number of questions assigned to each topic area.

To effectively prepare for the exam, you should use both the content outline and the corresponding manual. Together, these resources will guide your study and help ensure you’re ready for the examination.

After receiving a passing score on the exam, TDLR will issue your license.

Applicants with Criminal Convictions

Please see the Guidelines for License Applicants with Criminal Convictions, which describe the process by which TDLR determines whether a criminal conviction renders an applicant an unsuitable candidate for the license, or whether a conviction warrants revocation or suspension of a license previously granted.

Certified Instructors are required to report, in writing, any felony or misdemeanor convictions.
